About GMSC
The Greater Miramichi Service Commission (GMSC) is a regional organization in northeastern New Brunswick dedicated to providing essential services and promoting collaboration among its member communities. Serving a population of over 37,000 across a vast 12,473 km²—17% of the province’s total landmass—GMSC supports a diverse and vibrant region that includes the City of Miramichi, Greater Miramichi Rural District, Upper Miramichi, Doaktown, Miramichi River Valley, Alnwick, and three First Nations communities—Metepenagiag, Natoaganeg, and Esgenoôpetitj.
This dynamic mix of urban and rural areas is rich in natural resources, cultural heritage, and community spirit. Through shared services and strategic partnerships, GMSC works to foster sustainable growth, enhance economic development, and improve the overall well-being of residents across the region.

Read More2008 – Laying the Groundwork
The Government of New Brunswick introduced the New Brunswick Municipalities Act, establishing the legislative foundation for the creation of Regional Service Commissions (RSCS). This pivotal step aimed to improve regional collaboration and service delivery.
2009 – GMSC is Formed
GMSC was officially established as part of the province’s 12 Regional Service Commissions and began serving communities across the Greater Miramichi region with a focus on efficient, shared services.
2020 – Expanded Mandate
Legislative changes were enacted to expand the scope of responsibilities for all RSCS. These updates were designed to boost the coordination and efficiency of local and regional services across New Brunswick, empowering commissions like GMSC to play a more strategic role.
