Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) refers to leftover household products that contain chemicals that can pose a risk to your health or the environment if not handled or disposed of properly. These materials are often toxic, corrosive, flammable, or reactive—and they should never be poured down the drain, tossed in the garbage, or left in nature.
Common Household Hazardous Waste Items:
Look for items labeled with words like Danger, Poison, Caution, or Warning, and symbols such as:

Examples of HHW include:
- Paint and paint thinners
- Automotive fluids (e.g. motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid)
- Household batteries (alkaline, lithium, rechargeable)
- Aerosol sprays (cleaners, air fresheners, bug sprays)
- Household cleaners (bleach, drain openers, ammonia-based products)
- Personal care products (nail polish remover, hair dye, some cosmetics)
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Solvents, glues, and adhesives
- Mercury-containing items (thermometers, CFL bulbs)
- Even small amounts of hazardous waste can pollute our water, harm wildlife, and create health
Need to dispose of HHW?
Each year, GMSC holds Hazardous Waste collection events in the spring and fall. These events provide community members with the opportunity to safely dispose of their hazardous waste.
