Dr. Sarah is a family doctor, wife, mother, and now, a proud Miramichier. Her journey in medicine began in Khartoum, Sudan, where she graduated medical school and worked as a general practitioner. After five years of practice, she and her family moved to Canada, where she successfully completed her Canadian licensing exams and applied for residency.

She matched to the Dalhousie University Family Medicine Residency Program in Miramichi, New Brunswick, a groundbreaking program that made history as the first of its kind in the region.

Dr. Sarah and her co-resident are the first permanent residents ever trained at this site. And it’s here in the Greater Miramichi Region that her family has found home.

Why Miramichi?

Dr. Sarah had lived in larger cities across Canada, in Alberta and Ontario. But it was Miramichi that stuck.

Khartoum is a big city, but it has a small-town feel—just like Miramichi. The vibe, the people—it reminded me of home. And I found peace here.”

What truly stood out to her? The people.

“Their kindness is real and incredible, and I truly appreciate it. I came for residency, but I stayed because of the people.”

The medical community welcomed her with open arms, helping both her and her husband (a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology) settle in.

“From my preceptor, Dr. Chris Martin, to the Chief of Staff, and the Head of Family Medicine Department, everyone made it possible for us to thrive here.”

A Place for Families

Life in Miramichi allows Dr. Sarah and her husband to work full-time and still find time for what matters most: family.

“The shorter commutes, the slower pace, it gives us more time with our kids. They’re in a beautiful school, surrounded by teachers they love. Church has also become a source of community and connection.”

Dr. Sarah and her family found warmth and friendship through their local church, where they now volunteer. Many of her co-workers are also part of her extended community through church and social networks.

Innovating in Rural Health

As a resident, Dr. Sarah is part of a longitudinal family medicine program that gives her broad exposure and deep experience. She spends two days a week in family medicine under the supervision of Dr. Martin, managing her own patients and reviewing cases daily, and the rest of the week is spent training in the different specialties.

Miramichi’s healthcare model is what excites her most.

“Horizon Health makes collaborative care accessible. They now offer support for EMR systems, AI scribe, and allied health, all of it part of a family physician’s start-up budget if you're joining a Family Health Team.”

She’s also impressed by the accessibility and collegiality of the region’s healthcare professionals.

“I can call a specialist on a weekend—even if they’re not on call, and they’ll take the time to answer my questions. That doesn’t happen elsewhere.”

Her Message to Other Physicians

“If you’re a doctor looking for an extraordinary place to practice in, you can come here and try it with no strings attached. Locum in Miramichi. Come see what life is like here. If you have children or want a quieter, more connected life, this is the place.”

With plans underway to launch her own practice and join a Family Health Team, Dr. Sarah is excited to continue growing her career, and her family’s future—in Miramichi.

Both my Husband and I are honoured to serve this community.”

We know you'll love it here!
